On this Throwback Thursday, we take a look at the Academy Award®-nominated Trumbo film, starring Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren and Elle Fanning. The film also earned a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance By A Cast in a Motion Picture, shared by the entire cast. If you haven’t seen the film, then this is the time to not only view one of the best films of 2016, but to watch one of Elle Fanning’s previous performances before seeing her in starring role as “Ray” in 3 Generations, in theaters Friday, May 5!
For film music fans, check out this interview with the film’s composer Theodore Shapiro (St. Vincent, Secret Life Of Walter Mitty) on his score to Trumbo:

With dialogue almost as snappy and effervescent as the jazzy score, Trumbo and crew subvert and foil the enemy. The mix of drama and humor works well here and comedic backgrounds of many of Trumbo’s stars becomes an incredible asset, adding almost perfect timing to many a line-reading. – Consequence of Sound
Trumbo is timely in its portrayal of a moment when political speech is dangerously charged, yet unabashedly old-fashioned in the sincerity of its storytelling. – Los Angeles Times

Whether he’s working with the war-ravaged jungles of Tropic Thunder, the athletic glory of Dodgeball or the sultry espionage in Spy, Shapiro says that when he scores a comedy, he wants to make viewers care the way they would with a drama. – NPR
Over the years, Lakeshore Records has released numerous scores by composer Theodore Shapiro. From the recent Central Intelligence (get it here) to Zoolander 2, or comedy classics like Tropic Thunder and Blades of Glory, we love NPR’s observation (read the story here) about Theodore’s treatment of his comedy scores. He explains, “I feel like comedies often work best when the audience is just simply invested in those movies as stories.”
